Last night’s American Idol was okay…entertaining as usual but if American Idol was ice cream (which it is), I would say last night’s flavor was vanilla. Tony Bennett was the guest host so everyone sang old jazzy songs. It felt like senior citizens night. The only thing non-senior citizen was Haley breakin’ out the big guns. She looked pretty but was performing for the wrong reality show (Pussycat Dolls: The Search is in Studio 10). Here’s the low down…Sanjaya Stern: No major hair news to report. He slicked his hair back and wore a cream colored suit. He’s really not that bad at a singing - it’s just that everyone else is better. He remembered all of his words, danced with Paula and overall provided good entertainment. Simon said he was taking a new approach with his feedback and told Sanjaya that he was “incredible.” Gotta love it.
Hardcore Gina: 90’s are over…time to take the tongue ring out. Remember that cranky rocker – Star or something like that from a few seasons back. Gina reminds me of a not as good version of her minus the crankiness. Okay, so maybe they’re fairly different. Point being they’re both not that good and try too hard to be hardcore rocker chicks. Gina and Phil will be helping each other pack their bags today.
Hot Haley: Yes, she’s pretty, yes she has huge boobs, yes she has long legs. No, she’s not that great of a singer. Simon’s only comment to her was “nice legs.” The judges said she was a little bit too pageanty.
Beat Box Blake: Blake steps it up every week. The judges loved him again last night. Even though he had to sing an old lame song, it was still really good. It’s going to be a tight race between him and Mini-JT for the cute boy contest. Blake has a cool vibe and is also a good dancer…this is a tough one.
Mini-Justin Timberlake: So cute, so good, a big hit again! Judges said it was one of his best performances yet. Simon also said that he’s finally believable as a big superstar.
Melinda Mom: Great cruise ship performance but this is American Idol. Melinda has a great voice and sang amazing last night, but she’s just not that exciting. Judges love her voice but you can tell they are getting bored with her. It’s hard to knock her because her voice is flawless but she looses out on the popularity contest.
Lakisha the Great: Lakisha broke out the sass last night. Everyone loved her and the judges said she was amazing. She’s got more going for her on the personality front than Melinda but it’s still going to be a rocky road ahead. Why don’t Melinda and Lakisha just quit now and go open for Patty LaBelle? Just an idea.
Jordin Who: Jordin has a really really strong voice and seems really sweet. She sang strong last night and the judges said she sounded great. It’s just that she’s missing the “it” factor. There’s nothing about her that draws you in. Jordin performing live at the Grammy’s… don’t see it.
Phil Baldy: thing is hanging on by a thread. Last night was okay but boring. American Idol needs to lower the age cap.
